Citizens Advice Wirral is a charity that provides free, confidential advice on a wide range of issues from housing, debt, benefits, employment, consumer rights and more.
The service is reliant on volunteers who train for at least six months to give their time to help others.
Robyn de Brabanber is one of Citizens Advice Wirral’s volunteers.
Robyn has been volunteering at Citizens Advice Wirral since May 2014, dedicating 12 to 15 hours per week. Alongside volunteering, she is a first year law student at the University of Law, Chester.
In her spare time around lectures and coursework, Robyn heads for the Citizens Advice Wirral offices to begin her shift. She gives telephone advice, face to face advice in Birkenhead, as well as also supporting the team who work from the GP surgeries.
In a typical day Robyn can see around eight clients on six different issues.
“Volunteering helps me contribute to my local community” said Robyn.
So far Robyn has volunteered over 1000 hours at Citizens Advice Wirral. She says volunteering has helped her massively both academically and personally.
“Volunteering has been beneficial to me in a number of ways. I’m more confident, I can deal with a range of professionals such as bailiffs and creditors, which I don’t think I could have done without the volunteering experience I’ve gained here.
I also have a better understanding of people’s situations and the wide range of factors Wirral residents need advice on.
Volunteering for Citizens Advice Wirral has helped me understand how the law is used to help people overcome practical issues.
It has given me more relevant experience.”
After graduating Robyn wants to become a solicitor in employment law.
If you believe you could volunteer your time to help others, not only would you be helping your community but also building your employability skills and improving your CV.
